"White Lady" by Mary Salus

This quilt was inspired by a poem (“White Lady”) by Lucille Clifton. “White Lady” is a street name for cocaine. I was struck by her poem as a part of my job at the time was working with incarcerated (pregnant) women and their babies in an early intervention program (in Boston). Many of the women were jailed because of the “White Lady”. She is meant to be enticing and attractive, but she is dangerous. A copy of the poem is attached to the back of the quilt.
