One Austin summer morning granddaughter Ginger and I watched Swallowtails gather honey from a Texas Willow. Her love of nature inspired the quilt. A cluster of stained glass hangings helped organize my thoughts and gave me the idea for the Hummingbird panel. The Robin is from a beloved 1942 children's book. All other panels are original. Ginger suggested favorite familiar birds. I studied the detail of flora and fauna in identification books. Then turning books upside down, I drew on the right side of my brain and enlarged the pictures. The flower border represents land, the next represents sea, and the inner most border sky. I am 70 years old and have Fuch's Dystrophy so quilted in a hoop close to my eyes with a very bright light over my shoulder. It took a year and a half working an average of five hours a day. The fabric selection was such fun. I collected from many shops. I also learned art techniques while studying the details of the creatures. It was a total joy to make this quilt.
