Falling in love is always unexpected and delicious, whether with a person or a quilt. Here, I was smitten by the beautiful batiks in a fabric kit at The Quilt Store and by the fabulous design, Fireworks, WOW! However, the class was only for advanced-level paper piecing quilters and I didn't even know what paper piecing was. My inner voice said, 'You can do it.' Two sweet friends provided support but very soon, like falling in love, the real work began. I have never unsewed seams as I did here. I made mistakes, too many and, sometimes, the same ones over and over. Grr! With gritted teeth and high frustration, I kept slogging on, determined to get it right. Although the kit contained 45 different fabrics, I deleted some and added others more to my liking. Finally, I mastered the technique, got a solid sense of color theory and designed my own quilt backing so I could have flowers when I tired of fireworks. And the lesson is: Love takes a lot of work, but is well worth it.
