Overall Hand Quilting, Small

Substitute Stars by Jessie Shumake

Several years ago, my friend, Karen Reeder, was a part of the Austin Bernina store's "Project of Love". She took left over scrap fabrics and made the first step for a Square Dance quilt top. When I told her that I planned to make a Square Dance quilt to donate to my daughter's high school band fund-raiser, Karen gave me that top. I made a large wallhanging and machine quilted it, then donated it to the band auction. But, I loved the quilt so much that I took the small scraps that were left over from making the donation quilt and made this minature quilt. You may say that this quilt is a left over, left over. I made a few modifications to the design and spent many hours quilting while substitute teaching middle school classes, thus the name. In September 1999, I entered this quilt into the Gulf State Quilter's Association, miniture category, and won first place. Machine pieced, and hand quilted.
