"America" by Ruth Vinson Irwin
This 'America' quilt was designed after the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York and Washington DC. It represents not only some of America's flags, but the freedom for which it stands, and for those that perished in the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania. With God's vision and his gift of my hands I created this quilt and offer it in thanksgiving to all. The quilt is machine pieced and quilted. After witnessing the flags hung at the sites of attack, I decided to make this quilt in remembrance of those who perished, I and for their families and friends. The flags incorporated into the quilt are dated and listed as follows. 1. June 14, 1777- The Continental Congress adopts a flag with thirteen stars and stripes and the constitution is ratified allowing freedom in America. 2. July 4, 1847- This flag, about seventy years into America's history, has twenty-nine stars and thirteen stripes. At this time the first US Postage Stamp was issued. Let us not forget the anthrax-laced mail following the attacks. 3. July I 4, 1851 -This flag, some four years after the 1847 flag, has thirty-one stars and thirteen stripes. It followed Senator Henry Clay's Compromise of 1850 that admitted California into the Union as a non-slave state, a significant movement toward additional freedom in this nation. 4. Present Flag -The current flag has fifty stars and thirteen stripes. Its glorious presence was noted in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, and in the Pennsylvania countryside. May its pride shine over this nation and its people. The back of the quilt affords a memory tag with the Lord's Prayer and names of members of our church in the armed forces serving our country. Also patches of all our armed forces on hand dyed sky blue fabric.
