I've always been fascinated by the ancient Japanese crest designs I've seen in various publications. I finally got up the courage to enlarge them by hand (from a 1" picture) and convert them to appliqué designs. When I sketched out the layout for the nine appliqué blocks, I decided the four innerspace blocks created by the placement should have something as well. Kanji symbols seemed to be the perfect accompaniment for the Japanese crests. After searching various Kanji symbols, I settled on "peace," "destiny," "eternity," and "beauty." I named the quilt "Peace" as a bit of word-play for a "pieced" quilt and also as something to be longed for as we continue the Iraq war. The nine appliqué crest designs reading from left to right on each row from top to bottom represent the cherry blossom, butterfly, peony, gentian, "pink" flower, iris, gingko leaf, crane, and bamboo. The quilt is my own original design. All appliqué is done by hand and the "orange peel" elements which are paper pieced form the optical circles surrounding each crest.
