For the 2008 AAQG show, I personally challenged myself to design and produce a quilt that demonstrates the illusion of "depth". I chose an open square frame as my design element. Two sizes of square frames were used for structural interest. I relied on repetition and over-layering to establish the visual illusion of artificial depth. The illusion was enhanced by carefully arranging the frames and by selecting fabrics of specific color, value, and scale. For my background, I used the colors of black and gray. By using the solid dark colors in this application, it allowed the illusion to continue as the square frames of the background visually fell back and behind the more colorful frames.
