"Every style of clothing today is simply a permutation of something that was made before."
The evolution of fashion and costume fascinates me. I look at the wearables challenge and thought, "What is the real definition of a coat?" My first thought was a medieval surcote. Worn over a batwing tunic, a surcote never had sleeves and was often decorated and quilted with designs and family crests. Then the fitted Basque jackets of the 1870s came to mind, with their boning in addition to a corset. I combined these two concepts into my own permutation and created an homage to our beautiful Texas sunsets.
