This quilt has been in the works for more years than is comfortable to admit. It was started for my son Jonathan as a celebration for the award of his PhD degree in 1997. It is a visual expression of my pride in his achievement. Life's more challenging and heartfelt passages contributed to the delay in finishing it. Now it is given not only to honor Jonathan's scholarly achievement, but also to express my gratitude for his help, encouragement, and comfort to me at the loss of his father and my husband of more than fifty years. For me quilting is an outlet for expressing esthetic impulses. Making Jonathan's Quilt taught me the importance of quilting as an expression of love and loss and pride in the achievement of a child.
